Former Netherlands PM-wife’s euthanasia: Died holding her hand; Dries Van Eggt kept calling his wife my girl till the last moment
Former Prime Minister of the Netherlands Dries Van Agt and wife Eugene (both aged 93) died on Monday through legal euthanasia. Both were ill for a long time.
With the help of doctors, both of them breathed their last and remained companions holding each other’s hands till the last moment. According to a legal rights organization in the Netherlands, they were buried in nearby graves.
Eugene loved his ex-wife very much. A few years ago Eugene had said – He still calls me my girl.
chose the time and day myself
- Eggt was the Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1977 to 1982. He was a member of the Christian Democrat Party. Euthanasia was legally recognized in the Netherlands in 2000. Under this, a person can ask for euthanasia who is ‘suffering from a disease which is incurable or there is no scope for improvement in his health’.
- According to media reports, after living together for 68 years, Eggt and Eugene decided the time and day of their death themselves. During this period the panel of doctors was present.
- Egget suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2019. During that time he was giving a speech in a seminar. Many times he used to cross the party line. That’s why there was opposition also. This was the reason why he left the party in 2017. He was an opponent of Israel and a staunch supporter of Palestine. This couple has three children.
A look at euthanasia in the Netherlands
- In the Netherlands, after getting approval for euthanasia, doctors usually perform the last minute procedure at the home of the person concerned. During this, a special kind of injection is given to the patient and his breathing stops within a few minutes.
- The special thing is that this matter is investigated even after death. If even the slightest negligence on the part of doctors is found, they can be imprisoned for 12 years. During 2022, a total of 8501 people in the Netherlands sacrificed their lives through this legal method.
A member of the Legal Rights Organization shows photos of Egg and Eugene. The same organization has given information about the willful death of both of them.
Children also have the right to euthanize
- According to the report of ‘Jerusalem Post‘, Netherlands came into controversy in 2023 when the government here gave the right to euthanasia even to those children who are suffering from incurable disease and who have no hope of getting relief from treatment. Don’t be. It was also clear in this rule that only 5 to 10 children can get this right in a year.
- It was also clear in this rule that only children of 12 years of age or older would have the right to euthanize. For this, written approval of their parents will be necessary. People above 16 years of age will not need parental approval.
